 How did it earn its nickname, The Garden City? In 1856 Christchurch officially became NZ's first city. Town planning and architecture assumed a close affinity with the 'Mother Country' and English-style gardens were planted, earning it the nickname.

Christchurch is New Zealand's second-largest city and the gateway to the South Island. Bordered by hills and the Pacific Ocean, it is situated on the edge of the Canterbury Plains that stretch to the Southern Alps.

This journey, we will drive from Christchurch's dynamic re-emergence beginning our journey from the backdrop of its wildlife cruises at Kaikoura and a sunset return to the attractions of Akaroa.
